By Dalton Trumbo. Its an amazing, terrifying and an inspiring book. I came across this when watching Metallica's video of "The one". It had disturbing scenes from a movie. On reasearching more about it, i found out that the scenes in that video were from a movie based on this book.
This is an anti-war novel written during The Second World War times. Its about a young american in his 20's who leaves his family and loved ones to go to a war which he does not understand and does not mean anything to him. In the war he is struck by a rocket and he loses both his arms, legs, his eyes, nose, ears and his mouth. He ends up in a hospital fed through a tube.
The book is his thoughts and his struggle to communicate to the world that he is not just a piece of meat. He asks the people in the hospital to publically admit to his condition so that more people understand how horrible war is. How we can never justify taking a life for something as intangible as Democracy or Liberty?
The book makes you think and is written beautifully. A must read.
